THE MAKING OF BEN LAMP

A personal project and years in the making, Matthew sits down to reveal the inspiration and creative process behind the Ben Lamp

February 24, 2025 // It’s a question we always get asked (and love answering): Where did this design idea come from? And with that, we’re excited to share our new video series - in brief - that dives into the creative process and inspiration behind the Ben Lamp.

Being our first-ever table lamp and inspired by Matthew’s young son, he explores how a simple observation can transform underlying philosophies into physical realities.

“At play, Ben likes to stack blocks, rocks, or toys. We live by the ocean, so often times we will see him throwing stones or stacking stones…I felt it very fitting to take something he already does very naturally and inject it into the design,” says Matthew.

Crafting an object laden with personal significance, the legacy of the Ben Lamp will forever live on as a symbol of Matthew’s young son and a reminder of the importance of maintaining a sense of child-like wonder.

“We were able to create this very statuesque symbol of who my son is. It’s very emotive, and I think once you understand the creative process we went through, you immediately see it—you can’t unsee it.”

The design ethos at our studio draws inspiration from the everyday, forever seeking ways to elevate the mundane into magic. Our goal is to offer an outlet for inspired living through everything we create, leaving an element of awe and surprise for those that connect with what we do. We hope that sharing a little more into the ideation and development of a new product leaves you with a new appreciation for the care and detail we put into every collection.

Designed and created locally in Vancouver, Canada, the Ben Lamp is artisanally crafted to order. Base options include a diverse palette of solid stone varieties and colourways, with the possibility of exploring specialized materiality and colourways on request.

briefcase is the place where curiosity and creative expression intersect at Matthew McCormick Studio. It’s the place we collect and share what inspires our work, and a window into the process and ethos that drives our vision: to catch the world by surprise through everything we create.

A platform where the rules relax and imagination can run untethered, briefcase is where we play with new ideas, materials and projects that fall outside of the status quo.
