INTRODUCING THE BEN LAMP COLLECTION
A tribute to McCormick’s young son, Ben is a sculptural piece embedded with personal meaning
January 21, 2025 – NEWS // Matthew McCormick Studio has introduced their first-ever table lamp, Ben, as an ode to the fleeting moments of wonder and self-discovery we experience through the eyes of our children. Inspired by McCormick’s young son and the instinctive way he collects and stacks found objects, the Ben lamp is a delicate interplay of balanced forms and proportions, now offered in a palette of solid stone base options and a uniquely shaped hand-blown glass globe.
“The design intent for Ben was always clear: I wanted to take the essence of joy I feel when I see my son play, learn and interact with the world around him, turning it into something tangible and emotive in shape and form,” says McCormick. “I wanted the lamp to eternalize the marvel in those quiet moments when we discover something that we love.”

What loosely began as a familiar Dutch peg doll in shape, the Ben lamp evolved as McCormick played with numerous stacked forms, proportions and placements. He created and tested countless pieces until the Ben lamp felt just right, finally landing on three obscure stone shapes not stacked – but impossibly balanced.
“Creating a light embedded with personal meaning meant that I truly relished in the process of designing it. It also reminded me of why I do this,” adds McCormick. “The art of slowing down to experiment, be ruthless with ideation and enjoy each step along the way keeps me connected to who I am and the select pieces we choose to share with the world.”
Designed and created locally in Vancouver, Canada, the Ben Lamp’s base is artisanally crafted to order. Furthermore, each globe is hand-blown and uniquely formed for every piece. Base options include a diverse palette of solid stone varieties and colourways which include Monet White, Viola Calacatta, Roman Travertine, Rosso Levanto, and Portoro. There is also the possibility of exploring unique materiality and colourways on request for a fully bespoke option.

The expanded Ben Lamp collection is now available for purchase. It will be on preview for IDS Toronto from January 23 – 25, at booth #902, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre North Building, in collaboration with LIV Design Studio.
