Tasked with creating the focal point for their new flagship restaurant in Downtown Toronto, the team at JOEY engaged Matthew McCormick for a one-of-a-kind, bespoke installation, striking an organic fusion between nature and movement.
Featured as a central beacon within their recently opened location on King Street, a 19,000 square foot space in the historic area of Toronto’s Financial District, the high-impact installation mirrors an elevated interpretation of the lush greenery found throughout the space while adding an air of sparkle and whimsy.
“It was important to the design team at JOEY that we created a showstopper for the main installation, ensuring it was visible for passerbys through the two-story glass facade of windows,” says Matthew. “The restaurant is in the heart of Toronto’s concrete jungle, so there is certainly something magical about walking into an oasis of greenery and the willowing, gold mesh installation above the bar, surrounded in sparkling vine-like drops,” he adds.
A secondary, vine-like fixture draped above the kitchen was also created as a complement to the main installation, both utilizing McCormick’s meticulously crafted Arras system – a site-specific, customizable rope light strung with hundreds of individual LED diodes sheathed in a flexible, gold fibre material.

“It was fun for us to be able to incorporate the Arras into this project, offering a new configuration based on the design brief provided. It’s a flexible system so we’re excited to continue using it to experiment with new and different iterations,” says Matthew. “The JOEY design team had a very specific story they were trying to tell with this spectacular space and we’re thrilled that our piece was included.”
